Crochet for a Cause: A Bit Jazzier Baby Hat for a Welcomed One

Last week, I shared a pattern for a Simple Baby Hat to encourage us to encourage others who are in the throes of making the decision between life and its alternative.

Here’s A Bit Jazzier Baby Hat pattern to add a little fun to the welcomed baby photos.

A Bit Jazzier Baby Hat

Pattern Notes

Hook Size:  I for a baby hat

Hook Size:  G or H for a doll hat (or small baby)

Yarn Used:  Lion Brand’s Pound of Love

Do not turn.  Just keep working around the circle, until you reach the brim, then work back and forth in decreasing rows.

 

Crown

Round 1: Make a magic ring.  CH 1.  8 SC in ring.  Join.  (8 stitches)

Round 2: CH 2, SC in same st.  2 SC in ea st around. Join to top of ch-2.  (16 stitches)

Round 3: CH 2, SC in same st.  SC in next st.  *2 SC in next st. SC in next st.*  Repeat from * to * until back to beginning.  Join to top of ch-2.  (24 stitches)  

Round 4: CH 2, SC in same st.  SC in next 2 sts. *2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * until back to beginning. Join to top of ch-2.   (32 stitches)

Pull circle around and out a bit to flatten the tendency to curl.

Body of Hat

Round 5: CH 3.  Skip st.  SC.  *CH 2, skip st, SC.* Repeat from * to * until back to beginning. Join to second ch of ch-3.

Round 6:  CH 3.  SC in ch-sp.  CH 2.  *SC in sc, CH 2, sc in ch-sp, CH 2.* Repeat from * to * until back to beginning. Join to second ch of ch-3.

Round 7: CH 3, *SC in ch-sp, CH 2.* Repeat from * to * until back to beginning. Join to second ch of ch-3.

Round 8: Repeat Round 7.

Round 9: CH 2, *SC in ch-sp, CH 1.* Repeat from * to * until back to beginning. Join to top of ch-2.

Rounds 10-18: Repeat Round 9.

Brim

Work back and forth in short rows.

Brim of Bit Jazzier Baby Hat

Row 1: CH 2, SC in next 18 sts.  Turn.

Row 2: CH 2, skip st, SC in next 15 sts.  SC DEC in next 2 sts. Turn.

Row 3: CH 2, skip st, SC in next 13 sts.  SC DEC in next 2 sts. Turn.

Row 4: CH 2, skip st, SC in next 11 sts.  SC DEC in next 2 sts. Turn.

Row 5: CH 2, skip st, SC in next 9 sts.  SC DEC in next 2 sts. Turn.

 

Edging

CH 1.  Continuing around side of brim, base of hat, other side and front of brim, sl st in each st and ch-sp.  Join.  Finish off.

Decoration

Embellish as desired.

Braid on Brim

I used pink yarn and a tapestry needle to create a braided design where the brim meets the base of the hat.
