Meet Real Life Alex, Part 6: Refuge No More

In between Operation Christmas Child countdown posts, I am sharing details from my real life meeting with Alex Nsengimana, Rwandan genocide survivor and shoebox recipient.

This thought haunts me.

It was hard to hear.

It’s hard to write.

I imagine it will be hard to read.

Certainly, it was impossible to live through.

People,

people with names,

with individual names,

each fleeing the Rwandan genocide

sought refuge wherever they could.

Some looked for refuge in churches.

Priests hid them.

Until men with guns came.

Some priests told the men with guns

where the individuals with names

were hiding.

Twenty churches

in Rwanda

are now memorials

to the massacres

within their walls.
